7 gamblers arrested in Sopore: Police

Acting tough against social crimes, Sopore police said to have arrested seven gamblers, stake money of Rs 14,080 recovered along with playing cards.

A police spokesman in a statement said continuing its drive against social crimes, during patrolling duty, a Police party headed by IC PP Puthkha under the supervision of SDPO Sopore, raided a suspected gambling site at Haritar Rakh Hygam and apprehended seven gamblers.

The seven gamblers have been identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Ganie (80) son of Abdul Samad Ganie resident of Akhoonpora Haritar, Mehraj-ud-din Malla (39) son of Ghulam Muhammad Malla resident of Radigam Haritar, Mohammad Ayoub Laway (50) son of Ghulam Muhammad Laway resident of Radigam Haritar, Irshad Ahmad Malla (42) son of Habib Ullah Malla resident of Radigam Haritar, Mushtaq Ahmad Dar (50) son of Ghulam Muhammad Dar R/O Akhoonpora Haritar, Muhammad Ayoub Dar (65) son of Sonaullah Dar resident of Akhoonpora Haritar and Fayaz Ahmad Dar (53) son of Abdul Ahad Dar resident of Wandakhpora Haritar.

From the spot stake money of Rs 14,080 and a set of playing cards were recovered, he said.

He said that taking cognizance into the matter all the gamblers were booked and regarding the incident case FIR No. 13/2023 U/S 13 of Gambling Act stands registered in Police station Tarzoo. Further investigation into the matter has been initiated.

People of the area have appreciated the role of police for being prompt against such social evils. Persons found indulging in criminal activities shall be dealt strictly as per law. Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding anti-social activity in their vicinity, the spokesman added.
