Srinagar, Mar 01: An elderly man lost his life, while five residential houses were damaged in a devastating fire incident in Jamalata area of Nawakadal in downtown Srinagar on Thursday evening.
An F&ES official told Asian News Hub that five three-storeyed residential houses, solidly constructed houses with galvanized corrugated iron (GCI) roofing, were engulfed in a fire caused by an electrical short circuit. The attic portion, including roofing, and the second floor of all the houses, along with household goods, suffered severe damage in the fire.
Meanwhile, the first and ground floors of all the houses sustained indirect damage due to heat, water, and smoke. The total estimated loss is in crores, he said.
He said with the efforts of fire and emergency, police and locals fire was brought under control, however, the body of one of the house owner was recovered in a charred condition.
The body was shifted to SMHS hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, he said.
The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Bashir Ahmad Banday son of Mohammad Yousuf Banday.
