R R Swain takes over as 17th DGP of Jammu and Kashmir

R R Swain took over as 17th Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir at a function held at PHQ Srinagar, on Tuesday afternoon.

Spl DG Crime J&K, A.K Choudhary, ADGPs, S. J. M. Gillani, M.K Sinha, Vijay Kumar, Director, Fire & Emergency Services, J&K, Alok Kumar, Commissioner Secretary Industries & Commerce Vikramjeet Singh, IGP V. K Birdi, IGP (CIV/Hqrs), B.S Tuti and other senior officers from J&K Police were present on the occasion.

On his arrival R R Swain was received by senior officers and was presented guard of honour in the PHQ lawns. He also inspected the guard of honour.

A 1991 batch IPS officer R.R Swain before taking over as DGP Jammu and Kashmir remained posted at various important and key positions of Jammu and Police which included SDPO Kothi Bagh, SP Ramban, SP Kargil, SP Poonch, SSP Kathua, SSP Jammu, SSP Srinagar, AIG (P/W) PHQ and DIG Vigilance.

In November 2006 Swain went on deputation to Govt of India where he held very prestigious posts. In June 2020, Swain joined the J&K Police as head of the CID wing and today took over the charge of DGP J&K.

Immediately after taking over the DGP, J&K R R Swain chaired a meeting at PHQ which was attended by senior officers of the PHQ and other wings.

The HODs of different wings and senior officers of PHQ briefed the DGP about the working/functioning etc. of their wings and offices.

NIT Srinagar declares winter vacation amid ongoing semester exams

National Institute of Technology, Hazratbal Srinagar, has instructed all students to vacate hostels with immediate effect.

The instructions, the authorities said, are being made in pursuance of the declaration of winter vacations.

“Pursuant to the declaration of Winter Vacation for students w.e.f 30.11.2023 vide Order No. 60 of 2023 issued under endorsement number NITS/R/23/600 dated 30.11.2023 all hostel boarders (Boys and Girls) are instructed to vacate the hostels with immediate effect”, reads a circular.

Handwara vegetable market gutted in fire incident

The Vegetable market (Sabzi Mandi) in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district was Thursday gutted in a massive blaze, officials said.

An official said that the fire broke out in the wee hours today, left about 10 vegetable carts gutted in the incident, adding that vegetables worth huge amount got damaged in the incident.

Gulmarg among several areas receive fresh snowfall, rains lash plains

The famous tourist destinations including Gulmarg and Doodhpathri experienced fresh snowfall on Thursday while rains lashed plains, bringing the mercury down.

Reports said that several areas of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, which include Gulmarg and Doodhpatri as well.

The weatherman has predicted light to moderate rainfall at most places and light snowfall over middle and higher reaches today.

Meanwhile, the night temperature improved across Kashmir with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a minimum temperature of 5.3 degree Celsius.

The mercury in Qazigund settled at 5.0 degree Celsius while in Pahalgam it settled at 1.5 degree Celsius.

According to data, Konibal and Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0 degree Celsius each.
