Budgam man gets one year imprisonment in fraud case

Court directs him to pay 73 lakhs, including Rs 3 lakhs compensation to compainiant

A court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a fraudster from Budgam to one year of simple imprisonment.

The court has also directed the accused to pay Rs 73,50,000 including 3 lakh as compensation to the complainant.

According to the Asian News Hub (ANH), the Small Causes Judge, Srinagar, has said that the accused Mohammad Shafi Bhat, son of Abdul Rahim Bhat of Nadirgund, Peerbagh, Srinagar is convicted for commission of offence under section 138 Negotiable Instruments Act only.

“Accordingly, accused is sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for a period of one year and is also sentenced by way of fine to the tune of Rupees cheque amount plus half of the cheque amount as the case is of the year 2021 only therefore discretion is exercised in awarding lesser sentence instead of double the cheque amount.

Accused shall also pay an amount of Rs. 3 lakhs as compensation to the complainant The total amount to Rs (73,50,000/-) Rupees Seventy Three Lakhs and fifty thousand only,” the court order reads.

“The accused stands already lodged up in Kotbalwal Jail. The fine imposed shall be recovered by issuance of levy warrant to be executed by District Collector Srinagar authorising im t realize he total amounting to Rs. 73,50,000 (Seventy Three lakhs and fifty thousand only) by execution /attachment through civil process against both movable and immovable property of the accused,” it added.

Compliance report to be filed by District Collector regarding the execution within one month from the date of announcement of this order, the judgement reads.

Pertinently, Muhammad Shafi was arrested by Police in June last year after scores of people claimed that the man has duped them on the pretext of jobs, land, and other things.

Srinagar police on Saturday said that they have arrested ten persons for trying to vitiate peaceful atmosphere outside Jama Masjid in Nowhatta after Friday prayers.

They said that they will be booked under relevant sections of law.

Srinagar police on X informed, “10 Hooligans arrested for trying to vitiate peaceful atmosphere outside Jamia Masjid Yesterday after friday prayers. They shall be booked under relevant section of law. Public is requested not to indulge in such acts failing which law will take its own course.”

A mason died after he fell down from a rooftop of a house in Zirpora area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday.

Biker killed in Anantnag road accident

A biker has died in a road mishap in Ranipora area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday morning.
