ACB arrests Ward officer SMC for demanding, accepting bribe

Srinagar, Aug 20: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) traps and arrests Mohd Maqbool Bhat, Ward Officer Srinagar Municipal Corporation while demanding Rs 50,000 and accepting Rs 20,000 bribe as 1st Instalment.

In a statement issued here, ACB received a written complaint alleging therein that Ward Officer, Srinagar Municipal Corporation(SMC), Hawal, Srinagar is demanding Rs 50,000/- as bribe for allowing construction in favour of the complainant.

The complainant requested to the ward officer and pleaded for justice, who however remained adamant on his demand of bribe. He had asked the complainant to pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 as first installment. However, before paying the bribe amount to the accused person, the complainant approached Anti Corruption Bureau for taking legal action against the accused public servant under law.

On receipt of the complaint a Case FIR No. 33/2022 U/S 7 PC Act 1988 was registered with this Bureau and investigation taken up.

During the course of investigation a trap team constituted. The team laid a successful trap and caught the accused public servant Mohd Maqbool Bhat S/o Ali Mohd Bhat R/o HMT Srinagar, Ward Officer, Hawal SMC Srinagar red handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs 20,000 from the complainant as first instalment of Rs 50,000. He was arrested on the spot by the ACB team. The bribe money was also recovered from his possession in presence of independent witnesses. Subsequently, searches were carried out at different locations associated with the accused.

Further investigation into the case is going on, reads the statement.

Unidentified girl jumps into Jhelum in Sopore

An unidentified girl allegedly jumps into river Jhelum in Sopore area of district Baramulla on Wednesday afternoon.

Reports said that an unidentified girl jumped into river Jhelum from a bridge near Jamia Masjid Sopore this afternoon.

They said that the rescue operation has been launched to retrieve the body of the girl.

Srinagar among several places record coldest night of season

The minimum temperature has plummeted further in Kashmir while Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 2.0 degree Celsius.

Several places across Kashmir including Srinagar, Qazigund, Ganderbal, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Shopian, Bandipora and Baramulla recorded coldest night of season.

In Qazigund, the mercury settled at minus 2.0 degree Celsius while in Gulmarg, a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degree Celsius was recorded.

Pahalgam, a famous tourist place, recorded a low of minus 5.1 degree Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.7 degree Celsius.

ADGP law & order chairs joint security review meeting at PCR Kashmir

In order to strengthen and synergise the security grid of District Srinagar, ADGP Law and order Vijay Kumar chaired a joint meeting of Police and CRPF in Police Control Room Srinagar.

A police spokesman in a statement issued to Asian News Hub said, IG CRPF Ajay Kumar Yadav, IGP Kashmir V.K Birdi, DDIB, DIG CKR, DIG CRPF North & DIG CRPF South, SSP Srinagar, SSP PCR Kashmir, all the Nodal COs of CRPF, SP Cargo Srinagar, all Zonal SPs and SDPOs of Srinagar participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, a detailed security plan of Srinagar district was discussed in threadbare where in CRPF and Police were acquainted with their new roles besides suggestions were also taken from the field officers to have a fair idea of the shortcomings, avoid confusion at the cutting edge in order to make it a perfect and comprehensive CT grid.

Besides, ADGP L&O, IG CRPF and IGP Kashmir also contributed their valid suggestions. ADGP stressed upon all the officers that idea of a perfect security grid is only possible if the things discussed are implemented on ground in letter and spirit.

ADGP has focused upon strengthening function of joint police control room and better communication mechanism between field officers of CRPF and JKP in city. Area domination of water bodies was discussed and included in area domination plan in today’s meeting.

He has also instructed SSP Srinagar to conduct joint mock drill to handle post terror incident situations in city. ADGP Kashmir reinforced the commitment to dealing strictly with individuals disrupting the peace and emphasized the need for stringent actions under the law.

ADGP Kumar emphasized the necessity to strengthen the CI grid and enhance the basic functioning of police stations through effective supervision. The ADGP’s guidance and directives aim to fortify security measures and maintain a secure and peaceful environment in the district.
