Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Chief Engineer, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar, said that the work on phase-II of smart meters installation has been started in Srinagar.

The process is unlikely to be completed by March 2023 as directed by the Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta during a review meeting of the power sector in Jammu & Kashmir at the Civil Secretariat on September 27, 2022.

The Chief Secretary had stated that J&K is being given utmost priority in installation of smart meters and had stressed that 7 lakh meters must be installed and be made operational by March 2023 in Jammu and Srinagar cities.

However, the Chief Engineer said that the second phase of installation has already been started and the 2.3 lakh smart meters will be installed by the end of October 2023.

Pertinently, under the smart metering project, 59000 meters have been installed in Srinagar district.
